Part of my job is telling people not to hire me.
Somebody calls, describes their situation, and what they actually need is a volunteer site and an afternoon, not a resolution practice. So this post is the version of that conversation I have been having on the phone for years, written down. Where to get filing help in Omaha for free or close to it, what paid preparers charge for, and the specific line where free help runs out.
Where to get free tax help in Omaha
Free filing help in this city is real, it is federally supported, and most people who qualify for it never find out.
VITA
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program puts IRS-certified volunteers in libraries, community centers, and nonprofit offices during filing season. It serves taxpayers under an income ceiling, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English. Sites open and close by season, so the reliable move is the IRS locator for free tax return preparation for qualifying taxpayers rather than a list that went stale last spring.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide
TCE focuses on taxpayers age sixty and older, with volunteers trained on retirement income, pensions, and Social Security questions. The IRS describes the program on its Tax Counseling for the Elderly page, and the largest operator of TCE sites is AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, which does not require AARP membership. In the Omaha metro these sites tend to sit inside libraries and senior centers, and appointments fill fast in February.
IRS Free File and free online options
If your situation is simple and you would rather do it yourself at midnight than sit in a waiting room, IRS Free File partners with commercial software providers to offer free federal filing below an income threshold, with guided fillable forms available above it. Read the eligibility on each partner offer, because they are not identical and the free tier is narrower on some than others.
How much it costs when you pay someone
There is no fixed rate for tax preparation, in Omaha or anywhere else. What you pay tracks three things. How many forms your return requires, whether you have business or rental income, and whether the preparer is credentialed.
A simple wage return with a standard deduction sits at the bottom of the range. Add a Schedule C, rental property, multiple states, investment sales, or a K-1 and the price climbs, because the work climbs. Storefront chains publish tiered pricing by form. Independent CPAs and Enrolled Agents usually quote after looking at last year’s return, which is the more honest sequence.
Ask two questions before you commit. What is included if the IRS sends a letter later, and who will actually prepare the return. The answers vary more than the price does.
How to judge an Omaha tax service
Best is not a national ranking, it is a fit. The filter I would use if I were choosing for my own family looks like this.
- Does the preparer hold a PTIN and a real credential, meaning an Enrolled Agent, a CPA, or an attorney.
- Will the same person be reachable in July, not just in April.
- Do they sign the return, which they are required to do.
- Do they promise a refund amount before seeing your documents, which is the single loudest warning sign in this industry.
Volume shops staff up seasonally and let people go in May. That is fine if your return is simple and nothing goes wrong. It is a problem when something does.
Free help covers filing, not IRS debt
Here is the line, and it matters more than everything above it.
VITA, TCE, and Free File exist to get an accurate return filed. They do not represent you. Volunteers cannot hold your power of attorney, negotiate with a revenue officer, request penalty abatement, or file an offer in compromise. Those sites will also turn away returns that are outside their scope, which commonly includes complicated business returns and prior-year problems.
So if you are searching for a tax service in Omaha because you owe money rather than because you need this year filed, free help is the wrong door. Filing and resolving are two different jobs. The IRS has programs that can dramatically reduce what you owe, and none of them run through a volunteer site.
What to do if you already owe
Start with compliance. Nothing gets negotiated while a year is missing, which is why unfiled tax returns are almost always the first thing I fix. Then look at the balance itself and the options that apply to it, which is what the back taxes work covers.
If you want to see the whole menu before you talk to anybody, my services page lays out what resolution actually includes, and my Omaha page covers how I work with people in this metro specifically.
I am Ben Butterfield, an Enrolled Agent, and I do this work personally rather than routing it to a call center. You can read why I built the practice this way before you decide anything.
If you would rather start with background than with a phone call, my 7 secrets the IRS does not advertise covers what the agency will not volunteer. Otherwise, tell me what you owe and I will tell you honestly whether you need me at all.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the best tax service?
There is no single best. There is the right fit for your return. A volunteer site is ideal for a simple return under the income limits, a credentialed preparer is right for business or rental income, and a resolution practice is the right call when you already owe the IRS.
How much does it cost to have someone help with your taxes?
It depends on the forms your return requires and the credential of the person preparing it. Simple wage returns cost the least, and self-employment, rentals, multiple states, and investment activity all add to the price because they add to the work.
How much does H&R charge for tax prep?
National chains price by form and by service tier, and those schedules change year to year, so check their current published pricing rather than an older figure. Ask what is covered if a notice arrives after filing, since audit support is usually a separate product.
